Consider A Resolution For A Proposal For The Naming Rights To The Main Space Of The Addison Theatre Centre.

BACKGROUND:

At the April 12 Regular Meeting, the City Council approved the Naming Rights Policy for the Addison Theatre Centre that authorizes the WaterTower Theatre exclusive rights to the naming of areas within the Theatre in exchange for donations. The WaterTower Theatre received a proposal from James and Michael Canterbury and would like to name the Main Stage "The Canterbury Family Main Stage". The Canterbury's pledged $50,000 paid over a five year period in annual installments of $10,000 for the naming rights.

Holly Canterbury was a resident of the Town of Addison for more than 25 years and contributed in many ways to the Addison community. Holly was one of the founding members of the Addison Business Association, serving one of the longest terms in its history as Treasurer and President. Holly also started the original Carnival at Addison's Oktoberfest. Theatre was also one of Holly's passions and she was an instrumental supporter of WaterTower Theatre’s as one of its original subscribers, a member its Board of Directors, and a founding member of Women of WaterTower. Her belief in the importance of the arts to our community was demonstrated by the impact of her many years of support to WaterTower Theatre and, especially, by the enduring legacy of her lead gift to establish WaterTower Theatre’s Endowment Fund in 2012. Holly Canterbury passed away on September 1, 2012. Her two sons, James and Michael, have pledged to carry on Holly's legacy. Michael joined the WaterTower Theatre board in 2013 and has been a leading donor to WaterTower Theatre. The Canterbury's are major donors to the company who consistent support for and interest in our work is an inspiration to all on the board and within the company.

Per the adopted policy, the donor must submit a proposal to WaterTower Theatre. The WaterTower Theatre Board must approve the donor's proposal before submitting it to the Town of Addison. Once approved by the Board, the application is reviewed by Town staff and then placed on the next possible regular agenda of the City Council for final approval.
